Why the *PIP* Won’t You Improve – Writing Effective Memos to Employees for Counseling, Discipline, Performance Improvement Periods and Termination

Most employers realize that documentation of employee performance issues and clear termination memoranda is a critical step in motivating performance and defending against future claims. The question remains, however: what exactly should be in that documentation? In this practical and informative seminar, employment law attorney Karen L. Gabler will discuss the detailed steps involved in creating an effective performance memo.

Topics covered will include the following:

    What is a PIP?
What kind of memo should I write?
How do I start the memo?
    How much detail is necessary?
How far back should I go?
How many examples do I need?
How long should the memo be?
How can I let them know this is serious?
How do I explain what kind of improvement is necessary?
What do I have to say in every memo?
What should I never say in any memo?
What do I do next if they won’t sign it? (hint: writing “refused to sign” on the memo is not enough!)
Why isn’t my employee “getting it”?
What if I don’t want to make my employee feel bad?
What if I know my employee is going to be angry with me?
    Can’t I just say “it’s not a good fit?”
Why bother writing a memo if I’m an at-will employer?

Political Correctness at Work: Where to Draw the Line

Many employers are uncertain about how far they must go to police the words and actions of employees at work. Do you need a policy against bullying? How should you reconcile employees’ competing sensitivities regarding politics and religion? Can you still require employees to follow a dress code? In this program, you will learn how maintaining a too “politically correct” workplace can backfire.

    Learning objectives:

Learn how to draft a policy against harassment that will not encourage complaints from hypersensitive employees
Learn the limits of “freedom of speech” in the workplace
Learn how far you must go to accommodate employees’ religious beliefs and practices

Diversity: Down Hill Slope, Uphill Climb

Socio-political challenges to the importance of diversity in U.S. culture have made the discussion of diversity more important than ever. Human Resources professionals must balance these challenges with the need to continue to promote diversity. As a result, HR professionals will need to engage in difficult discussions at every level of the organizations they serve.

This program aims to frankly discuss the socio-political challenges to diversity today and to offer HR professionals guidance as to how to perform their role as a diversity champion while recognizing the different emotions and viewpoints within their workforce and even within themselves.

    Attendees Will Take Away:

    An overview of recent socio-political events affecting the diversity discussion in society and in the workplace;
Strategies for recognizing and overcoming personal biases; and
Techniques to promote empathy and transcend biases to become a more effective champion of diversity in your workplace.
